Which dog collar do you recommend to control barking?
I live in a townhouse and have a 13 week old Toy Shih Tzu and would like to keep down her barking. My neighbor has not complained but I asked her could she hear my pup and she said "only occasionally".
Instead of waiting until someone complains, I would like to get a collar for her but don't know much about them. Which brand of collar would you recommend?
First I commend you for being a proactive and responsible dog owner. I can't believe the people who are saying dogs bark...that's what they do. Sorry, dogs bark for different reasons, but barking and disturbing the neighbors should never be allowed. An occasional bark to let you know someone is at the door is ok. Barking all day while your at work is not ok.
I use a citronella collar on my dog. It works like a charm. At this point, all I have to do is put the collar on him and he knows not to bark. He also just barks much less than he used to. Th citronella collar does not work on all dogs though. The real heavy duty barkers don't care that citronella is squirting them, and they just bark anyway.
The electric collars work. They are not inhumane! The dog learns in a couple of minutes that barking will get him a shock. The better collars have different levels. The 1st bark is a low level and it goes up until the dog stops barking. I've used an electric collar on a problem Doberman I had. She learned to not bark when the collar was on her. If she had continued to bark as much as she did, we would have needed to get rid of her. So, you can say, the electric collar saved her life.
How to Control Excessive Barking of Dog?

The smell of citrus will distract your dog and stop their barking.
Static Anti-Bark Collars
One of the most effective methods for controlling the excessive barking of your dog is with the use of static shock collar. The collar has a device that fits tight against the voice box and, when the dog barks, a static shock is delivered. The intensity of the shock varies depending on how loud your dog has barked.
Ultrasonic Collars
This is another one of the bark control collar that is considered more humane in comparison to the static collars. It works the same, but emits an ultrasonic tone in response to a dog’s bark. This will also cause distraction to that will stop dog from excessive barking.
In order to get the right bark control collar that is suitable for your dog, determine what the usual causes of their barking are. One should take care and ensure that one does not use the dog barking collar in case the barking is a result of separation, anxiety, fear or phobia.
