A Citronella bark collar is designed to release a short citronella scented spray in order to distract and discourage a dog from barking. The sound, site and smell of the spray is used as the bark deterrent. Citronella oil is extracted from cultivated grasses and is often used to deter animals and insects.
How The Citronella Bark Collar Works?
The small unit attached to a dog's collar contains the pressurized spray scented with citronella. When the unit is activated it releases a measured amount in the form of a spray mist. This is similar to a short burst from a pressurized spray can. Being positioned on a collar and under the dog's chin the spray generally travels in an upward direction.
Some citronella bark collars are activated by sound i.e. the noise of the bark (the unit contains a small microphone resting against the dog's vocal cords). Other units use small probes to sense the vibration of the vocal cords when the dog barks.
When refilling the unit a pressurized canister containing the scented liquid is used to top up the bark collar unit. This is similar to topping up a cigarette lighter with fluid, the pressurized liquid travels from the canister to the bark collar unit.
What if I have 2 dogs?
It is only fair to consider which dog is being trained to reduce the barking and if any other dogs nearby will be affected by the spray. Ensuring the correct fit will minimise any accidental overflow and discomfort to innocent bystanders.
On the subject of overflow, consider if the unit is being used for a barking dog problem inside the house? Will the house smell of citronella?
How many activations?
The number of activations or sprays that can be produced by the bark control collar will vary between products. Keep in mind that replacement canisters will be needed from time to time to keep up with the bark reduction training programme.
How long any bark collar will be needed will vary between dogs. Monitoring the results and giving the dog a consistent message will be required. Being persistent and consistent is always the best approach.
Durability
These products have been designed to stand up to being carried around by a dog and so are quite tough. Check what the warranty covers and how long it lasts. If the unit is activated by sound using a microphone, have a look at how water proof it is and if your dog is likely to put the waterproofing to the test.
The effect on the dog.
One thing I would recommend keeping in mind is how the dog is affected by the spray. Ensure that your dog will not have any allergic reaction to the spray; there are now unscented spray collars available. Dogs are clever so keep in mind that if your dog works out a way to avoid the spray or the correction the desired result may not be achieved.
How do I know if it's right for my dog?
Each dog is different and so is the reason they are barking. Seek the advise of a professional who has experience in a variety of bark correction collars. Seek help and advice on your particular dog, taking in to consideration the reason for the barking and the environment he lives in.
