Have you ever had a bad experience with a retractable leash?
Mine worked great for 5 months until last night, I took my dachshund out to go potty and he saw a cat and bolted and the line snapped. Luckily we were right by my apartment and the cat jumped over onto a patio so I picked Dexter up and took him home.
Has this ever happened to you? The leash wasn't cheap, I got it at Petmsart. It wasn't a Flexi which I've learned are the best. Should I try a different brand or does this happen with every brand? Or just stick to a regular leash (which is kind of weird after using a retractable, dog doesn't have much room to sniff around)...what do you think?
I don't think that there is ever a reason to use a retractable leash. The whole point of using a leash is so that you will have control over your dog, and a retractable leash gives you little or no actual control. I would recommend just getting a regular leash, or doing extensive training with your dog until you can trust him off leash.
I love the name Dexter, btw!
Find the Perfect Leash for Your Dog
If you own a dog, you need to have a leash and collar when you take the dog out for a walk. Sometimes it is necessary to use the leash and collar at home. This is usually used for dogs that are aggressive toward guests or other pets.
There are a few different choices when it comes to finding a leash and collar. The collar that you eventually choose should fit the dog properly and be comfortable for the dog when it is attached to the leash. You should always have your dog on a leash whenever they are in public places. The collar should have their ID tags and rabies tags in case they get away from you.
If you have just gotten a new leash and collar, you should try it out at home before you bring your dog out into a public place. Try it inside and then bring the dog out into the yard to make sure that the dog behaves properly. Do this for a few days until the dog gets used to the new collar and leash. You don’t want to take any chances on your dog getting loose and hurting someone or getting hurt. If you find that the dog is pulling you around, you will need to teach the dog how to behave on a leash before you can take him for a walk.
There are some leash and collars today that are more advanced technologically than the old ones. There are chest leashes that give you a bit more control and retractable leashes that are very popular but can still be a problem. You should always make sure that your dog has no more than a six-foot leash.
Options For Collars:
At one time there was really only the choke collar that was used for training your dog. Today, it is still available, but it is not the best option for training. There are a few new alternatives to collars such as halter collars and buckle collars. Each type has its own set of fans that believe it is the best method for training their dog.
There is another type of collar that is used that some people think is cruel to the dog. That is the prong collar. This collar looks like some form of medieval torture device, but in reality it is a gentle tool to teach a dog to behave. It will keep the dog from pulling on the leash and dragging you along behind. This is helpful if you have a large and powerful dog. It’s not the best choice for every dog, but it does work in some instances.
The prong collar is a very misunderstood training device. It is not meant to be worn by the dog everyday and it is not meant to be used by very aggressive dogs. They are also not appropriate for dogs that are very nervous and may act scared when they are away from their home. It is also not good for very young puppies, but in the hands of an expert trainer they can be used on older puppies.
This type of collar is made with links that will pinch the dog whenever the collar is tugged. It will not break the skin of the dog, but will only feel like a pinch that you might receive on your own skin.
Some of the makers of these collars have now started putting rubber tips on the prongs. This might minimize the effect that the collar is supposed to have. If there are rubber tips that might mean that the prongs are too sharp. Test the prongs out on your own fingers and make sure that they will not penetrate the skin.
They should not be worn every day; they are only to be used for training. If your dog is having a hard time being trained it might have to wear the collar more often. You should always be calm when you are training your dog. Dogs will often react to our emotions and they need consistency when it comes to their training.
The prong collar is meant to be a training device. It should never be used as a decoration on the dog. Show your dog love and compassion. If you give him all of the care and do not lose your temper with him, he will reward you by obeying your commands. They truly are your best friends.
