Crafting ideas for these items?
I've got a few old collars and tags from my dog who passed away. I don't really want to part with them and would like to make something out of them. I'm thinking of using the tags as charms on a necklace or bracelet. But what can I do with these collars? They're medium size, probably about 1 1/2 to 2 foot of the nylon material. Does anyone have any ideas of something I can make them into or use them for? I'd really like to make a nice memento of my best friend.
Please be kind. I know this may sound kind of morbid to some but this dog was my best friend and a huge part of my life. Thank you in advance!
I have the same situation, except with collars from several dogs. It recently occurred to me that I could use them as handles for a totebag or buckle them together to make a shoulder strap for a purse or tote, or even a belt. If they were used on a bag, you could put some pictures of the dog on it, too.
You have my deepest sympathy - it's a terrible loss. I know the first time a dog of mine passed away, I couldn't vacuum the house for a couple of weeks because then his fur would be gone, too. I wish you peace and comfort.
Some dog breeds need a harness when walking vs. a dog collar. Smaller dogs such as Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese and Chihuahuas need to walk on a harness to avoid damaging their trachea and delicate necks. Even some larger dogs like bulldogs and pugs are better on a harness because collars can easily slide off their thick necks. Any dog that tends to pull a lot while walking should also be on a harness.
A regular harness will not inhibit pulling because the mid section is actually the strongest part of the dog. Use a "no pull" harness made from a softer material if your dog tugs when walking with you.
One of the downsides of using a harness is that some are difficult to put on. Your best bet is a step in harness where the dog just straddles a center strap, one paw in one side and then the other side and you pull it up, clip it on the back and attach a leash. There are even one-piece step in harnesses that come with a leash attached and are primarily used on smaller breeds.
Some trainers object to using a harness because it can be more difficult to train a dog, especially for the "come" command.
Restraining straps in pet carriers are for use with a harness only. Never attach the strap to a collar because it is a choking hazard. The same goes for a seatbelt. It is also important to keep your pet in the back seat, in a car seat, kennel or use a seat belt attachment. Pets should never be in the front seat where they can interfere with the driver or suffer an injury or death if an airbag deploys during an accident.
You can attach tags and charms to a harness, but they do look better on a collar, so consider investing in the matching collar to keep on the dog all the time and use the harness for walking.
